All these companies have different ways of calculating premiums, which will vary according to the personal circumstances of each applicant; and they have different criteria for working out just which motorists, and which cars, they will insure and on what terms so you may well wish to get a quote from each of them. Here is a very short description of each company; it is only a brief summary however and you should refer to the companies' own websites and policy documents for full information, or consult a qualified adviser if you are in any doubt.

This company can provide policies for permanent UK residents between one and 28 days and they are the only company offering cover for this type of policy to under 21s; the age range they will accept is between 18 and 75, and they will cover an approved list of vehicles provided that they are worth an absolute minimum of £1500. please note that the maximum payout for loss of, or damage to a vehicle is limited to £40,000. They have a panel of insurers which are invited to quote and these insurers have different acceptance criteria. Applicants should be permanent British residents with at least three years residency in the UK and have held a full UK driving licence for a minimum of six months, or a full licence issued within the EEC for 12 months. The minimum legal cover required for driving through other countries within the EU is included, and subject to the exact proposal details and the choice of which insurer to go with it may be possible to increase this to comprehensive cover for an extra premium; this option is listed under the optional extras if it is available, if not you could try another of their insurers. Third-party only or comprehensive policies are available as is optional temporary AA cover, personal accident cover, minor damage cover. The length of time to get a quote should be less than two minutes, plus less than 3 minutes to complete the transaction but terms and conditions apply and you should allow time to read the full policy documents, including those for the optional extras, before making a decision.

As well as UK or EU drivers they are the only company that we aware of that will provide 1 to 28 days cover for non-resident drivers with licences issued in New Zealand or Australia, provided of course that they are driving a UK registered vehicle within the UK or countries of the European Union. As well as cars they will cover vans and motorhomes, and subject to terms and conditions they will cover motorhomes that have been hired, as well as vehicles which have been borrowed. This means that clients who own motorhomes can rent them to other people and arrange insurance policies for them for up to 28 days. Please note that this rental facility is available for motorhomes only, and not other vehicles. Day insure are quite happy for their cover to be used for obtaining a road fund licence. Comprehensive cover only is available for driving within the UK and it reduces to the minimum legal necessity when driving throughout the countries of the European Union (although this can be increased to comprehensive for an extra premium) and includes using the vehicle for towing a trailer or caravan, although it must be noted that, unlike the car, the towed item would be covered for third-party only risks. The age limits for applicants, subject to conditions, are 21 to 75. Vehicles must not have a value of more than £50,000. getting a quote takes about 3 min with another 3 min or so to complete the transaction; it will be necessary for you to enter your driving licence number before the transaction can be concluded, as a security measure so you will need to have your licence to hand. Again, you need to carefully read the policy details to ensure you are buying the right policy for your needs.

They will not only provide 1 to 28 day cover, but also a 'pay as you go' monthly policy with a minimum of one month and a maximum of eight months cover, which is very similar to a standard yearly policy only the contract period is a single month rather than a full year, with the policy being renewed automatically at the end of each month unless the policyholder gives notice of cancellation.

The 1 to 28 day policy is only available to UK residents over the age of 25, and the proposal form is quite long and involved. A comprehensive questionnaire means that many of the assumptions that have to be made by insurers that keep questions to an absolute minimum can be avoided and since insurers tend to err on the side of caution too many assumptions can mean that they have to assume the worst, and calculates premium accordingly. This may be a good thing for those older, more experienced motorists who have had a relatively accident and conviction free record, since they will not be associated with younger and less reliable drivers.
